Corrosion Control

Guam's marine climate destroys metal 3× faster than the continental U.S. Our ISO 12944 corrosion control systems stop rust before it starts — and extend asset life by 15+ years.

Guam's climate is a corrosion engine

Salt spray, 85% humidity, and intense UV create the perfect storm for metal degradation. Without protection, bare steel shows surface rust within 48 hours.

P.01

Salt Spray

Guam's constant trade winds carry salt aerosol inland. Salt deposits on metal surfaces accelerate electrochemical corrosion 24/7.

P.02

85% Humidity

When relative humidity exceeds 80%, a microscopic water film forms on metal. This electrolyte layer drives corrosion even without visible moisture.

P.03

UV Degradation

Tropical sun breaks down coating resins. UV causes chalking, cracking, and embrittlement — opening paths for moisture to reach the substrate.

ISO 12944 Systems

Corrosion control built for Guam conditions

Every system specified to the correct ISO 12944 corrosivity class — from C3 (moderate) to C5-M (marine extreme). Products engineered for salt-air, high humidity, and tropical UV.

01

ISO 12944 Classification

We classify your environment (C3-C5-M) and specify coating systems rated for that corrosivity. No over-engineering, no under-specifying.

02

Zinc-Rich Primers

Sacrificial zinc primers galvanically protect steel. Even if the topcoat is damaged, zinc corrodes first — buying time for maintenance.

03

Multi-Barrier Systems

Zinc primer + epoxy intermediate + polyurethane topcoat. Three independent barriers against moisture, salt, and UV.

04

Surface Tolerance

For weathered surfaces, we use surface-tolerant epoxies that bond to tight rust. Extends maintenance intervals without full blast.

05

Cathodic Protection Integration

For submerged or buried assets, we coordinate with cathodic protection systems for comprehensive defense.

06

12-Month Follow-Up

Every project includes a scheduled 12-month inspection. We catch coating breakdown before corrosion takes hold.

03

Assess, specify, protect, monitor

A systematic approach to corrosion prevention — from environmental assessment to long-term monitoring.

01

Environmental Assessment

Determine ISO 12944 corrosivity class. Measure temperature, humidity, salt deposition rate, and UV exposure at your site.

02

System Specification

Select primer, intermediate, and topcoat rated for the corrosivity class. Specify DFT ranges and application method.

03

Application

Blast to SP-5/SP-10, apply coating system per manufacturer specs. Document each layer with DFT readings.

04

Monitor & Maintain

12-month follow-up inspection. Touch-up any compromised areas. Schedule next maintenance cycle.

Corrosion control questions

Common questions about protecting metal on Guam.

ISO 12944 is the international standard for protective coating systems on steel. It classifies environments by corrosivity (C1 through C5-M) and specifies coating systems, surface prep, and DFT ranges for each class. Guam typically requires C4 (high) or C5-M (marine extreme) systems.
Properly specified and applied ISO 12944 systems last 15-25 years before major maintenance. C5-M systems (marine extreme) typically require a maintenance coat at 7-10 years. We provide manufacturer warranties of 5-20 years depending on the system.
Yes. For surface rust, we blast to bare metal and apply fresh coating. For extensive corrosion, we assess structural integrity, repair or replace compromised sections, then apply a full coating system. Surface-tolerant epoxies can extend intervals on weathered surfaces.
Cathodic protection uses sacrificial anodes or impressed current to make metal structures cathodic (negative charge), preventing electrochemical corrosion. It is used for submerged or buried assets like tanks, pipelines, and marine pilings. We coordinate with CP specialists when needed.
